Interpretations

Upright
The Seven of Cups presents a cascade of possibilities — each one glittering, each one potentially illusory. Under the third decan of Scorpio (Venus), desire multiplies and distorts. This is the card of fantasy and wishful thinking: when so many options shimmer before you that discernment becomes impossible. Not everything that sparkles is gold. Which cup holds something real?
Reversed
In shadow, the Seven of Cups becomes either clarity piercing through illusion or deeper entrancement in fantasy. You may finally see through the glamour and make a grounded choice, or you may retreat further into daydreams as a substitute for difficult action.
The Card
Titled 'Debauch' in the Thoth tradition (a word Crowley chose to indicate excess, not literally debauchery), this card corresponds to the third decan of Scorpio (20°–30°) under the rulership of Venus. Scorpio's emotional intensity meets Venus's seductive beauty. Sevens test what Sixes established. In Cups, the test is discernment: can you tell the difference between genuine emotional possibility and attractive fantasy? The Seven doesn't say imagination is bad — it says that not every imagined future is meant to be pursued.
