Interpretations
Upright
The Five of Cups is the bitter taste of emotional loss — the spilled cups that command all your attention while full ones wait behind you. Under the first decan of Scorpio (Mars), loss cuts deep and clean. This is the card of grief, disappointment, and the painful recognition that something you valued is gone. The wound is real. But it's not the whole picture.Reversed
In shadow, the Five of Cups becomes either acceptance of loss or wallowing in it. You may finally turn around and see what's still standing, or you may identify so completely with grief that it becomes your entire identity. Recovery begins when you're willing to notice what wasn't lost. The Card
Titled 'Disappointment' in the Thoth tradition, this card corresponds to the first decan of Scorpio (0°–10°) under the rulership of Mars. The transformative intensity of Scorpio meets Mars's capacity for wounding and being wounded.
Fives disrupt what Fours stabilized. In Cups, disruption comes through loss — the shattering of emotional security. Three cups have spilled, but two remain upright. The Five's deepest teaching is not about what's lost but about the quality of attention you bring to what remains.Decan Correspondence
